Smooth Moves: The Relocation Guide for Families on the Move

Smooth Moves: The Relocation Guide for Families on the Move Review

See more picture

I did my original review below in 2001. The year is now 2006 and we have ordered literally hundreds of copies of this book for our relocating employees. As long as this book is available, we will be ordering it long into the future. The advice is priceless.

Moving is a stressful life experience under any circumstances. Ellen Carlisle, with her delightfully easy to implement tips, has shared advice from her own life that will make the transition of moving not only easier but enjoyable for the whole family. Ellen's conversational style eases the reader through the phases of relocating--from the initial realization to the actual move and everything in between. There are even chapters to guide the caring parents as they help their teenagers and younger children through this exciting yet scary life change. Ellen deals with the necessities in a simple straightforward manner and tops everything off with encouragement that "Yes, you can do this and have fun too!" We were so impressed with Ellen's book that we ordered 200 to implement into our company relocation program. The feedback from our relocating employees has been very positive. They were thankful to have the book to guide them through the ins and outs of relocating. I would advise anyone making a move to read Smooth Moves. Smooth Moves is THE relocation guide for families. The author's 17 years' experience involved 8 moves, 7 states, 6 houses . . . and 3 happy, well-adjusted children. The tone is calming and reassuring, and the tips are indispensable. The reader is taken through the basics--choosing a realtor, house sale and purchase. But the human side is invaluable. Learn how to help small children, teenagers, and parents alike adjust quickly, easily, and comfortably throughout each step of the relocation process.

great "morale" book but very limited on nuts-and-bolts - -
I want to like this little (thin) tome, but it's not much help for the rent-a-truck self-mover, the family planning to rent in a new town, or the family planning to keep (and rent out) their existing home. It's a by-the-numbers book: Selling Your Home, Buying a New One, Working With the Movers. In fact, this book could have been written by your average relocating consulting firm - groups that have a lot of advice unless for people such as the author, less so for those preferring to relocate frugally. The chapters on family adjustment are informative, but with few new tips for those who've already brushed up with the much advertised online sites for relocation.

Family Circle Easy Crochet: 50 Fashion and Home Projects (Family Circle Easy...)

Family Circle Easy Crochet: 50 Fashion and Home Projects (Family Circle Easy...) Review

See more picture

While the crochet patterns in this book aren't necessarily *easy* (most are intermediate with a few advanced) the projects are extremely creative and modern. The afghan patterns are the best (and there are lots of them), one with blocks that display multiple kinds of stitches in each block, one with star blocks, one mod looking one with diamond blocks, one with pine tree blocks, and more. All have good contemporary graphics. Lots of patterns for several great hats, many, many shawls and sweaters, and various bags. Variety is certainly a feature of this book, and something for every age group. Like I said though, this is not the place for a beginner to start, except for a couple of the projects, and it certainly doesn't provide any lessons on *how* to crochet, just brief reminders really for those who already know. If you do know how to crochet, the book provides great charts and diagrams for how the stitches should look and how to size the clothing, helpful for visualizing what it is exactly you are doing. Great book to look at for creative projects, color scheme ideas (the color combinations they use are very contemporary), and not easy but not too complicated projects.
Fifty designs range from bold and contemporary to sweetly traditional. Make special projects for the kids, elegant eveningwear, sweaters, shawls, vests, tote bags, coverlets, table linens, throw pillows, and more. A section on crochet basics enables beginners to complete their first projects successfully. A Selection of the Crafters Choice Book Club.

Mistakenly gives KNITTED pattern for jacket - R. L. Thompson - Michigan, United States
I hope this is simply a one time mistake, as I just purchased this book.

On page 27 there is a great looking cream crocheted jacket pictured. Unfortunately, the pattern (which starts on page 26) is an entirely different KNITTED pattern. For something or other in fuchsia no less. In a bulky weight yarn. :-)

Also page 26 states "Continued on page 135". However, the pattern actually continues on page 130, but at least that part is for the crocheted jacket. Which means I found out the neame of it, if not the designer. Therefore I sent an email to the publisher so they can see about posting errata for the pattern on their site (there is none at all for this book as of today).

Like I said, hopefully a one time mistake for this book, because the patterns are really nice, which is why I gave the book four stars.

I look forward to making the jacket one day as well as many more of the items shown.

Great book - Helen F. Moser - KY
A great book, obtained from the library, loved all information and projects that were in there so purchased it. Well worth the money. A lot of projects can be made for gifts. Well written instructions.

At War and At Home: One Family's World War II Correspondence

At War and At Home: One Family's World War II Correspondence Review

See more picture

This extraordinary collection of World War II correspondence offers a fascinating look at the lives of an average American family from western Pennsylvania. With all three sons participating in the war, the McClung family members, all remarkably good letter-writers, had ample opportunity to share their thoughts and views on life in the war and on the home front.

In the family’s small town of Butler, Pennsylvania, Frank McClung was not only a banker but also an air raid warden, a war bond drive solicitor, and a farmer. His wife Mary was president of the local YWCA and sponsored social events for the servicemen and servicewomen stationed nearby, and teen-age daughter Mary Anne helped to support various activities on the home front. The sons’ war participation was extensive: Bud, an enlisted man with an anti-aircraft artillery unit in the Battle of the Bulge in Europe; Bob, a Navy pilot and aircraft carrier landing signal officer in the Pacific Theater; and Dick, an aide to the General Counsel of the Navy in Washington, DC.

Vivid and detailed, At War and at Home: One Family’s World War II Correspondence shares the McClung family’s widely ranging views on life, literature, politics, and the conduct of war.

Home-Based Employment and Family Life:

Home-Based Employment and Family Life: Review

See more picture

This book is about families who combine home life and income-producing work under the same roof. Based on 899 homeworking households in nine states, the analysis presents detailed information about individual worker and household characteristics; work characteristics for both business owners and wage workers; family functioning types; management behavior; and adjustment strategies used in family life, the community context, and the home-based employment experience over an extended period of time. This is the first publication of a serious longitudinal study of the phenomenon of working from home with historical considerations of how and why so many people are choosing this option. It points to the significantly positive impact at-home workers are having on their families, their neighborhoods, and their communities.

The Fulfilled Family: God's Design for Your Home

The Fulfilled Family: God's Design for Your Home Review

See more picture

It seems to me that John MacArthur writes books in two broad categories. The first is books that often address cultural issues or specific issues within the church. This includes books like Hard to Believe or Ashamed of the Gospel. The other category is books that are drawn from sermons series he preaches to his congregation at Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California. The Fulfilled Family, the lastest in a long line of MacArthur's books, falls squarely in the second category. This book began as a series of sermons expositing Ephesians 5. It is no more and no less than what we have come to expect of John MacArthur - well-written, deep, challenging, and above all else, firmly biblical.

The book is divided into five chapters of roughly equal length. There is one chapter for each of the family, the wife, the husband, the child and the parents. Following the theme of the book, each chapter exposits a portion of the fifth chapter of Ephesians and other parallel texts.

The theme of the book is the importance of mutual submission. This is not the mutual submission taught by those who would have us believe in the equality of roles between men and women, but the mutual submission exemplified by Christ Himself. Husband, wife and children are all called to be submissive to one another, being clothed in humility. This is the very core of Christlike character. "As Christians, this is the mentality that should govern all our relationships: 'In lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interest of others' (Phil.2:3-4)" (page 10).

This theme pervades each chapter as MacArthur calls for wives to submit to their husbands, for husbands to honor their wives, for children to respect their parents and for parents to love their children. Ultimately a family can only be a fulfilled family by following God's divine plan for family life.

A short book, at only 126 pages, The Fulfilled Family provides a challenge for any believer. After all, every one of us is either a husband, a wife or a child. It is the type of book that makes an ideal gift. While there are more thorough books on the family (including some written by John MacArthur) this one does what it sets out to do - provide biblical wisdom to address the constant challenges facing the divine plan for the family. Needless to say, I recommend this book.

The Fulfilled Family: God's Design for Your Home Feature

  • ISBN13: 9781400280445
  • Condition: NEW
  • Notes: Brand New from Publisher. No Remainder Mark.

With traditional family values in decline and under assault, how can parents convey Godly principles and morals amid competing messages? In The Fulfilled Family, John MacArthur, respected Bible teacher as well as experienced father and grandfather, takes a look at strategy for families as outlined in Ephesians 5 and 6.

What is MacArthur's secret to his successful family? "There's no magic. There's no formula. There's no gimmick," he says. "It's not about how many times we did something, or who was in charge of this or that, or what kind of processes or methods we used. It comes down to questions that have to start in my heart: Am I committed to obedience to the Spirit of God? Am I committed to the controlling influences of the Word of God? Am I going to live out a Christian life? Because you must first answer yes to all of those questions before you have a successful family."

Fulfilled - A. Haynes -
This book is in tuned with what the bible teaches, that is, it sticks to the truth that one expects when we read the word of God. It helps you to understand purpose of the various components(individuals ) that make up the family and the family as a whole.

The Fulfilled Family - KSD - Birmingham, Alabama
This is a must read for any adult but especially for those contemplating marriage. The Biblical role of husband is beautifully defined and likewise the role of the wife. This is a book any engaged couple should read together and discuss. You will read how God and the scriptures define a Godly partnership in the marriage. It is beautiful and it brought teas to my eyes.

Welcome Home, Forever Child: A Celebration of Children Adopted as Toddlers, Preschoolers, and Beyond

Welcome Home, Forever Child: A Celebration of Children Adopted as Toddlers, Preschoolers, and Beyond Review

See more picture

Christine has given us a wonderful way to help children and families explore a topic that eventually comes up in most adoptions of older children - the loss of the early months or years with the adopted child, or the loss of arriving in the family at birth. Children and parents mourn many missed moments like a first step, a first word, first haircut, etc. Christine helps parents and children talk about these losses. Also, as the book is read, sons, daughters, Moms and Dads readily shift from the sadness to the glee of the "firsts" that did occur upon and after the adoption. This leads to much laughter as an array of experiences are reviewed. Through the feelings and the discussion, attachment is nicely enhanced. Welcome Home is certainly the best children's book available! Welcome it into your home today!

Brothers and Sisters in Adoption After expressing their excitement at welcoming their new child home, the parents acknowledge that they missed significant events and milestones in the child's early years. The family then cheerfully looks forward to the experiences and `firsts' they will share and the memories they will make together. Throughout the book, the parents promise to love, nurture, and protect their child. Finally, the family reiterates their joy at welcoming their Forever Child into his or her Forever Family.

very appropriate book for adopted kids - David L. Frazee - LODI, CA, US
After reading this book i felt like the author hit the nail on the head. The wording was sweet and done quite poetic. The message was clear that the child was wanted and desired by the family and that they will be loved for life. The pictures of the humanoid cat family made for cute illustrations of the story.

The Stay-at-Home Dad Handbook

The Stay-at-Home Dad Handbook Review

See more picture

While the day-to-day, 9-to-5 (only it's sometimes more like 24/7) career of child-rearing is still largely a female domain, Mr. Mom is no longer a movie cliche, but an SAHD, or Stay-at-Home Dad. As more mothers bring home larger pay checks, and more paying jobs can be done at home, more fathers find themselves able and willing to do the daycare thing. Thus the rise of dads like Peter Baylies, founder of the At-Home Dad Network and publisher of its newsletter, and thus this very useful and pragmatic guide for "Men Who Clean Bathrooms and the Women Who Love Them."

The Stay-at-Home Dad Handbook would be an excellent tool for any expectant parent, male or female, who wants to look after both home and children. Baylies is full of clear and clever advice about establishing routines, cleaning house (and how to schedule this around the needs of a small child), dealing with tantrums, attaining and maintaining a satisfying social life, living on one income, working at home, avoiding burnout, and what to do when the kid hits kindergarten age. Some of this stuff men simply need explained to them, and Baylies does that with admirable precision, flavored with amusing examples of traditional can-do male attitude - there's a really good idea about how to recycle your old computer and edutain your child at the same time - and tips only a dad would think of, or publish. (Having fun in the summer months via the "ice cube meltdown in armpit" method comes to mind.) But the book's guy-ness comes through most strongly in the "Spotlight on Dad" profiles that finish each chapter: vignettes, some funny and some poignant, by other SAHDs about their at-home experiences: the frustration of waiting and waiting, a squalling infant in one's arms, for the breast-feeding mom who's stuck on the freeway; the guy who's finally taken the proud step of calling himself "a professional parent." ("And if you call me Mr. Mom, I'll hit you with my diaper bag.")

It would be nice to hear a little more about the less tangible rewards of staying at home: the ease and intimacy of life with one's child, the pleasures of not commuting and of being one's own boss. But not to quibble; with its attention to detail and the appendix of cool resources, Baylies's latest child is for any father-to-be who dreams of becoming a real pro. -- Melanie Lawrence for the FEARLESS REVIEWS

The Stay-at-Home Dad Handbook Feature

Written by a stay-at-home dad for other stay-at-home dads, this handbook addresses the particular parenting issues men face when they become the primary caregivers. This "man-friendly" resource offers practical solutions to such challenges as living well on one income, understanding the wife's breadwinner status, cleaning the house without feeling overwhelmed, and networking in a female-oriented community. Creative anecdotes offer supportive and effective advice to help stay-at-home dads successfully deal with the psychological issues, as well as the everyday details, that make this parenting situation different. This advice-oriented guide also offers a special section of newsletters, online chat groups, playgroups around the country, and stay-at-home dad organizations.

Great resource for new stay-at-home dads! - SSH - Washington, DC
I ordered this book for my husband who is a new stay-at-home dad. I browsed through the book and was ecstatic about all of the great info. It addresses common issues for stay-at-home dads such as experiencing isolation and feeling a loss of pride. And it provides tips for keeping the house clean (which I LOVE), disciplining children, multi-tasking, etc. There are short stories writeen by actual dads that were surprisingly touching and funny. What I loved most about this book is that it's written by a dad for dads - it's concise, to the point, and changes topics quickly before the reader can get bored. Perfect!
